Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Speaking with Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff

  • In a seemingly never-ending game of “he said, she said”, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige once again contradicted previous statements from producer Amy Pascal about whether or not Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff films (including “Venom”, “Silver and Black” and the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man animated film) will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continuity. While speaking to JoBlo, Feige said the following: “Right now, Spidey is in the MCU and it's just Spidey. ’Civil War’, ‘Homecoming’, we've already shot a lot of Tom Holland's scenes in the upcoming ‘Avengers’ films, and we're just starting to solidify our plans for ‘Homecoming’ 2 — we won't call it that, whatever it is — which is exciting because it'll be the first MCU movie after untitled ‘Avengers’ in 2019. It'll be the way ‘Civil War’ informed everything in ‘Homecoming’, those movies will launch him off into a very new cinematic universe at that point. Those five movies are [what] we're focusing on.” Earlier this month, Feige told AlloCiné: “For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony Project”. Days later, “Homecoming” producer Amy Pascal contradicted Feige’s comments on the Sony/MCU connection, saying: “It will all take place in the world that we are now creating for Peter Parker. It’ll be adjunct to it, it may be different locations, but it will all still be in the same world and they will be connected to each other as well.” These conflicting comments seem to imply that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have yet to definitively confirm mutual plans to feature any of the Spider-Man spinoff characters (such as Venom, Miles Morales, Black Cat and Silver Sable) into future MCU films. It’s still a possibility, however, that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could pop up in these spinoffs; though Holland recently confirmed at a press event that “it’s not something that I know that I’m involved in”.

The upcoming Animated Ultimate Spider-Man film, which will feature the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry and Liev Schreiber, is directed by Bob Persichetti and will hit theaters on December 14th, 2018. The Silver Sable / Black Cat spinoff film, titled “Silver and Black”, is written by “Thor: Ragnarok”’s Chris Yost and will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
