Phil Lord and Chris Miller being fired from the Young Han Solo film in the midst of production

Variety is reporting several new details on the recent departure of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the currently untitled Young Han Solo standalone film. According to the report, Lord and Miller were fired from the production “after months of conflict with producer [and LucasFilm President] Kathleen Kennedy, others from her LucasFilm team, and co-writer and executive producer Lawrence Kasdan”. “Some insiders believe that while Kennedy wants to make a splash by hiring young indie directors such as Gareth Edwards and Rian Johnson, she’s ultimately unwilling to empower them to make their own creative decisions.” One of Variety’s sources gave some more insight on the conflict, saying the following: “It was a culture clash from day one. [Kathleen Kennedy] didn’t even like the way they folded their socks. They weren’t given the leeway to do what they had to do. Kathy, her team and Larry Kasdan have been doing it their way for a very long time. They know how the cheese is made and that’s how they want it made. It became a very polarizing set.” In related news, The Hollywood Reporter has also revealed some new details on the productions behind-the-scenes drama, saying: “Lord and Miller have a comedic sensibility and improvisational style while Kasdan favors a strict adherence to the written word — what is on the page is what must be shot. The creative clash, according to one insider, also came down to differences in understanding the character of Han Solo. ‘People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He’s sarcastic and selfish,’ said that source. The friction was felt almost immediately when the movie began shooting in February, sources say, but the directors always thought it could be worked through. Kennedy, the producer and head of LucasFilm, decided to back her lifelong colleague, who shaped much of Solo’s character in ‘Empire’ and ‪’Return of the Jedi’ and who had a specific tone in mind for the new movie.” Lord and Miller “were said to have been blindsided by the firing, which they learned about Monday, according to one source, although another disputed that account. The production had gone on a short hiatus to review what had been shot and to clear the air. It is expected that a new director will take the next several weeks, with the production shut down, to go over what Lord and Miller have shot, re-edit what they’ve filmed ‘and go from there,’ according to one source.” The Young Han Solo film, which stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thandie Newton, Ian Kenny and Michael K. Williams, is written by Lawrence and Joe Kasdan and is currently slated for a May 25th, 2018 release (which LucasFilm says will stay the same despite Lord and Miller's departure). "The movie will explore the duo [Han and Chewie]’s adventures before the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian.” What do you think of Phil Lord and Chris Miller being fired from the Young Han Solo film in the midst of production?
