Ron Howard replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller as the director of the Young Han Solo film

• The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Ron Howard has officially signed on to direct the completion of the Young Han Solo standalone film! This comes after directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from the project three weeks before the film was expected to wrap principal photography due to creative differences with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy. The news has also been officially confirmed by LucasFilm, with President Kathleen Kennedy releasing the following statement: “At LucasFilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film.
  
  We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.” The currently untitled Young Han Solo film, which stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Thandie Newton, Ian Kenny and Michael K. Williams, is written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan and is currently slated for a May 25th, 2018 release (which LucasFilm says will stay the same despite Lord and Miller's departure). "The movie will explore the duo [Han and Chewie]’s adventures before the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, including their early encounters with that other card-playing rogue from a galaxy far, far away, Lando Calrissian.” Lawrence Kasdan and “Jumanji” director Joe Johnston were also under consideration to take over the films directorial duties, but Howard had always been the frontrunner.
