Hulk/Red Hulk Film On James Gunn’s List Of Past Interests

While Marvel’s cinematic branch hasn’t shown strong interest in a solo Hulk film with Mark Ruffalo, the day could come where the big green giant returns with a feature of his own.
Recently, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed in a his past desire to bring the comic storyline of Hulk/Red Hulk to the big screen.

That’s not to say we will never get a film featuring the Red Hulk (where, presumably, William Hurt would take on the role) – the MCU shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, and they’re bound to give the Hulk another vehicle of his own at some point, but for now, a fascinating “what if?” for Gunn: what if he had been given a Hulk film instead of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Would his voice have translated as well into Banner’s world as it did with Star-Lord and company? What director is best suited to give the Hulk another go? Would another director have been as successful with the Guardians?
Things to think on. Until then, we’ve got Dr. Banner and his gnarly alter-ego returning to screens this November in Thor: Ragnarok, where the Hulk will have a supporting role and will play a little bit with the Planet Hulk storyline from the comics. As for Gunn, he’s likely in the planning stages of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he’s confirmed he’s writing and directing, though Marvel has yet to give the film an official release date (2020 feels like a safe bet).
