Robert Downey Jr. On Retiring From The Role Of Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. has opened up about his possible retirement from playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spider-Man: Homecoming marks Downey Jr.’s seventh outing as the eccentric billionaire since his introduction in 2008’s Iron Man. After being recruited by Iron Man to help him in his fight against Team Cap in Captain America: Civil War, Homecoming follows Peter Parker now under the guidance and leadership of Stark in hopes he will eventually become an Avenger. Stark himself is now feeling responsible for Peter and wants to make sure the young web-slinger stays away from real danger while he is still discovering the responsibility of his powers and what it means to be a hero.
But Downey Jr. won’t be playing Iron Man forever. The star recently made headlines when he revealed he would retire the Iron suit before it became embarrassing for him and in a new interview featured on Good Morning America, Downey Jr. was asked how many more Marvel films we can expect him to appear in when he explained:

“It’s like with a team if you’re going to hang up your jersey, you want to make sure the team is in good shape and they can still compete at a high level because ultimately that’s what made the whole thing worth doing anyways.”

While Downey Jr. is certainly beginning to think about his inevitable exit from the franchise, the actor is already set to reprise his role next year in the culmination of the MCU with Avengers: Infinity War and could possibly return for the fourth Avengers film which is expected to begin soon. Until then fans can see the star as Iron Man when Homecoming swings into theaters this weekend.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters this Friday.
